Most rooms start with white walls, and this is the generic look for many households.
It can have a calming effect and positive emotions, it can also lead to a lack of stimulation that can be a terrible thing in a bedroom. Browns tend to remind Americans of family and emotional ties between them and the world. Orange is a color that makes people happy, but it is also the color associated with the food and could lead to midnight snacks. Yellow creates a very positive effect on people psychologically, but only in the short term. Prolonged exposure to that color can lead to irritation.
Blues and greens evoke serenity and peace. These are colors associated with the nature and the ocean.
